Beginnings
David began his design-build construction company Roberts Architectural Services as his architectural thesis project while still attending college in 1977 with Professor Lloyd Gadau as his thesis advisor. This first Roberts project was commissioned by the Judson Partners and was called the 2130 Ewing House Renovation and located on the corner of Ewing and Payne in Evanston. The project served as a design-build conceptual model where David experimented and developed techniques and practices that would serve as the basis for his emerging practice. David designed and built the total renovation of the dilapidated 1890's Luxembourger style farmhouse and performed all the labor with the help of his father Marcel and old friends Brian Franczyk, Mark Raedle and George Rieger and very understanding clients. Lunch breaks were spent on the exhilarating 50 foot tree swing in front of the house. We had a lot of fun building that project and learned that the design - building process should be enjoyable for everyone, especially our clients.
