A Page From Dave’s Sketchbook Joyeux Noel

.

In 1980 I sketched this Church in Villiers en Lieu, France where my Grandparents were married in 1918 at the end of World War I. My Grandfather was a Cavalry officer in the American Expeditionary Force in 1918 when he met my Grandmere at the US HQ where she was drawing maps for the Army. Many of our Cousin-Cousines still live within sight of the Church in this quintessential French village and it one of my favorite places to visit.

This is the 1918 wedding picture of my Grandparents Walter Broadas Roberts and Simone Marie Louise Arnoud in the garden of my Great Grandparents. The newlyweds left for the Chicago at the end of the war and sadly never had the opportunity to return to France. In 1975-76 I attended architecture school in Versailles France and during a memorable 1975 Christmas in France I reunited our French and American families for the first time since 1919. Since that 1975 Christmas reunion our families have enjoyed many visits here and in France.
